A worm gearbox, or worm drive, is a type of right-angle gearbox that uses a threaded shaft (the worm) to drive a toothed gear (the worm wheel). This configuration is uniquely designed for applications that require high torque in a compact size, significant speed reduction, and, in some cases, a non-reversible output motion. How a worm gearbox worksThe worm, which resembles a screw, acts as the input driver. As it rotates, its threads mesh with the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the wheel to turn at a much slower speed. A single-start worm, for example, will advance the gear by only one tooth for every 360-degree rotation of the worm. This simple mechanism enables a massive speed reduction and a corresponding increase in torque.
